Gypsum roses

Gypsum roses, the idea of them has been born long time ago. Inspiration was the 3D poster which my cousin, made at her home. I wanted to design nice place at living room, to hang something on a white wall. Also I wanted to do it myself.

It is perfect! I have this above my desk. I like it.

I bought two bunches of artificial roses. I separated them of each other. The roses has green cover under which is wire. I bent this wire to use this to hanged all roses with gypsum cover. On the picture below You can see how they have been drying for few days. I made them in the winter time, that wasn't so warm, maybe that's why drying time extended somewhat in my case. I used gypsum and dilute with more water than was indicated on the packaging. As much as needed to put the roses to gypsum. But is was important to make this very quick, because this gypsum is rapidly losing its liquid properties.

When gypsum was totally ready (was hard), I put two layers of emulsion paint and waited till will become completely dry.

On the poster below You can viewed three most important steps: How to prepare 3D roses: gypsum, glue and hang on the wall.

Components which I used ti prepare red basis:

  • plywood, for instance from old furniture
  • triangular hangers and screws
  • red suede as adhesive foil (another option is to paint the appropriate paint)
  • hot glue, construction stapler

I divided plywood for three parts: the middle part was a little longer than the parts from outside. Next I mounted triangular hangers to each part, each has two screws. In my situation screws were a little to long that's why it had to be file off by the metal handball. After preparing plywood like this I could put red adhesive foil on it. The surface is suede, so I had to be very careful, not to leave visible traces. On the back side, further I strengthened this by stapler.

Fixing the roses was very complicated. They were dry and it was problem with forming them on the red plywood. They were drying on the clothes dryer. Maybe if they would have been drying on the ground could been easier - but I'm not sure because I haven't done like this. On the middle on the picture below You can see how some part of roses crumbled up. Hot glue, better one and stronger typical for gluing: ceramics, wood and others.

I glued roses and after that had to wait till glue will be totally cold. Next step - correction. Prepared: small paintbrush and white paint - the same which used before. I put last layer on the places which were a little destroyed. I've made this very carefully, to not painted red basis. Almost ready.

Now prepare the screw on the wall and hang on it, here I asked for some help. Picture which You can see below is as on the wall in my living room.

How do You like?
